From inst(1M):

stale All installed subsystems on the target that must be
re-installed due to hardware changes.

fresh The subset of stale subsystems that are also on the
current distribution. For example, the command
install fresh may be used to re-install software that
has been affected by a hardware upgrade.

No it isn't, but I'm a real newbie on IRIX, and I spent less time to
completelly reinstall from scratch than searching to solve the problem.
Moreover, I just brought the Octane, so there is nothing critical on it,
and I prefer start using it from a fresh clean install ;)

in inst, use the following:

keep *
install stale

then open whatever media you need to resolve the conflicts, usually the
foundation CDs plus the current overlays.

Yes, the gfx libs for V6 are different, you must reinstall the eoe.sw.gfx
packages.

I did the same (from SE to VPro V6). When I remember right I had to set
some variable to tell Inst about the grafix board and then reinstall
eoe.sw.gfx. No need to install from scratch (this isn't Windows, is it?).

Yes... its not plug and play. Your have to reinstall certain parts of
the gfx subsystems.

I tried to reinstall eoe.sw.gfx like this on Inst
keep *
install standard
install prereqs
install hardware
go

It displayed some conflicts (some were regarding eoe.sw.gfx) So I tried to
solve them an then it goes removing/installing new packages. But I didn't
worked !
That's why I posted, because I wondered it is a software problem, but I
feared a compability problem between my LCD screen and the V6 card. By the
way, I'll be fixed tonight, if I have enough time to format and reinstall
Irix !

Hi,

I just upgraded my Octane (Irix 6.5.11, PROM 4.5) from an ESI gfx card to
a nice V6 gfx Smile
My config meets the requirements for a V6 card, Irix and PROM revision
recent enough, the PSU is Cherokee

But I get some troubles, I don't know if it is normal :

The Octane boots up, so I can go to the system maintenance. a hinv
command says me there is a "ODYSSEY" card. So the V6 is well recognised.
Moreover... I can see the screen, isn't it ? ;)

But when I booting up Irix, The display seems to be frozen...
I have to describe my install :
- my monitor is a LCD Samsung 930BF that support SOG (it worked with the
ESI and my Indy)
- there is a 4 ports KVM switch (I also have an Indy, and a peecee)

So I said the display seems to be frozen, because I get messagebox saying
Irix is booting up, and this never change, even after many minutes... And
if I switch on over machine with the KVM then switch again on the Octane,
the monitor seems to go out-of-sync !
The systems seems to be up (it answers pings) and I can stop it cleanily
by pressing the power button.

Someone told me about the necessity of reinstalling gfx libs when
upgrading from SI to Vpro cards, (I didn't done it) so I would know if it
could be the cause of this problem ? In any case, I'll reinstall Irix
from scratch...

Another question, regarding the keyboard : I'm using a French keyboard,
connected to the KVM, so it' s peecee keyboard (Logitech cordless) and
there is strange behavior with it on Irix... for example the numeric
keypad dosn't work (the "ver num" produces a '/', etc. Is there a
workaround for that ?

regards,
