Have a look at your hard disk behavior just before(!) the system freezes:
I can observe first a Harddisk-lock-up, then the kernel tys to flush the
cache, meanwhile the load increases and then the system hangs.
First I thought it was a Harware interference with the IDE-Bus, bit with
Windows everything was fine, so it is a problem with the linux driver and
some special WLAN cards (like mine is a cisco 11 MBit)

Just tried pulling the video card (Radeon 7000, about 3/4 years old)

mean that the card was the problem or that the card was pushing the
monitor to places it couldn't physically go? I had XFree86 dialed in
to the exact settings the monitor would allow.

Loose connection? Shake the cable and see what happens.
Look at /etc/X11/XF86Config(-4) or use xvidtune to see
which is driving the monitor harder. Rearrange the config
file(s) so that they both drive it the same way.

I did what someone suggested, actually, and reseated the Radeon 7000. It
seems that when it's seated completely, it's not quite flush with the back
of the case. I'd forgotten about this. So maybe in my zeal to make it
flush the first time, I'd unseated it slightly. It hasn't given me any
problems today so far. I'll keep you guys updated. Maybe it's a heat
problem (I'll know soon if it is) or maybe that was it. Weird.

look for further information.
Any suggestions?
There is a SuSE 9.1 installed, but I don't know whether this is important.
If you're having "random" freezes, start with memtest86 (use google),
and work from there. If your memory is good, then something else is
fubar. Things I've seen cause strange problems:
- Power supply fan (lock-ups)
- Bad IDE interface PCI card (unable to login!!!)
- Bad NIC (various up to lockup)
- Bad laptop hotplug bay CD-ROM connection (computer freeze until drive
reseated)
|
I'll add to that:
Any motherboard that's using faulty capacitors.
Corrupted filesystem (I've had it happen with ReiserFS)
Failing power supply or overloaded system
One trick I often try is to see if caps-lock still works. If it's a
high-level software crash (e.g. desktop, making the machine appear locked
up) often caps-lock still works. If its low-level software or hardware
then often it doesn't. Not a hard and fast rule of course, but sometimes
it's useful.
Have you added anything to the PC lately (another drive, upgraded memory
etc.) or been inside the case for any reason?
cheers

The NVIDIA and ATI binary drivers sound like what you're going to have
to use for decent 3D acceleration (or any at all!)
|
In my experience the opensource driver included with X.org 6.8 works
better with 9200 than the binary fglrx 3.11.0 together with XFree86 4.3.0.
With better I mean both a lot more stable, more correctly rendering and
faster (better FPS). However, part of the faster performance might be
explained by the fact that I was running fglrx in 24 bpp and X.org in 16
bpp.
That said I could also add that upgrading my Slackware 9.1 from XFree86
4.3.0 to X.org 6.8 by compiling from source and install was a lot easier
than installing the binary fglrx driver on XFree86 4.3.0. Most of my
attempts to configure the fglrx driver ended up in a segfaulting X.

This is a long shot, but worth sharing, I hope:
I recently got a new keyboard that had the Scroll Lock key where I was
expecting the Home key to be. I got a lot of freezes by unwittingly
hitting the Scroll Lock key. Now I learned hit the Scroll Lock key a
second time rather than rebooting.

What video card do you have? I had an nvidia mx4000 card which would
freeze very often, and sometimes give me a black screen when X started. I
just got myself an nvidia fx 5200 card which works smoothly.

In addition to the other advice, a 'sloppy' technique in your case
is:

The modules.conf excerpt is for module autoloading. You technically
don't need it to use your sound card. But it sure makes life easier if
you have it.
"IF" you compiled from source just for your card, the
alsa-driver-???/modules/ path should have all of the modules you need
loaded to use all of the features that you compiled for and are supported
(to limited extent) by alsa for your card. Beyond that read everything in
alsa-driver-???/doc/ and the blurps in the kernel documentation tree.
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/sound/VIA-chipset apparently there's some
quirks with DMA and the like that via the manufacturer is unresponsive on.
Otherwise use the OSS drivers if this is too much trouble for you.
http://www.opensound.com/
Also note certain other things can and will lock your sound card. Most
of them are wrappers for the sound card. KDE runs artsd by default.
Gnome esd by default. And several others. polyphony, jackd, ...
You will need to either stop these apps so whatever test method you're
using can use your sound card natively. Or direct the sound app to use
the appropriate interface to the wrapper. Or use the interfaces app
wrapper to launch the application. artsdsp, esddsp, ...
I don't know your configuration so I can't tell you more. ps -Al output
might help. As well as lspci output. If you're getting a crackle out of
it, then the drivers are at least half right. In the fact that they
affect your sound to some extent.
Just bear in mind this limited chip gives you ONE channel out, which means
you can only run ONE appication that accesses the sound device directly.
Some common apps you might not use sound on do access your sound and may
be locking it. KDE, Gnome, Mozilla, Gaim, most games, most media players,
.... Some applications will launch sound daemon wrappers for you if they
prefer to use them, only they neglect to unlaunch them when you exit the
application.
http://www.alsa-project.org/
I've otherwise stopped trying to use dmix and the likes. There's some
serious latency issues with it that's just more trouble then it's worth.
At least for this chipset on this laptop.

=================================== |
Question : What 'make' are these LC series Linux Certified notebooks.
They probably are made by one of the 'Big Boys', but which one.
Being in the EU buying a unit in the USA is a bit cumbersome, also from a
warranty point of view.
I am looking at various laptops for Linux only ,and when I have an
opportunity ,physically testing them with Knoppix 7.3 (live CD) and also
check the various Linux (in)compatiblity sites . But to find a laptop for
Linux which works with WIFI (PMCIA) ,excepts all the usual USB devices and
drives means that you are moving inside a minefield.
Three days ago I 'Knoppix-tested' a Toshiba P30-110, with a Pentium 4
,3.2GHz-HTT538 ,512MB RAM ,60Gb HD ,DVD-RW-multi drive , 17 inch wide screen
display , ATi Mobility Radeon 9700 graphics .
At a first glance it works with Knoppix 7.3 which has XFree86 -X window .
The mouse is fine .
But I have some doubt that it could be loaded with the Mandrake 10.1 distro
, it needing an X.org driver.
So my quest is continuing . Perhaps some people on this NG can give some
advice whether the above or any other Toshiba portable machine (with roughly
that spec) is suitable for Linux ,and for which distros (considering the
XFree86 versus X.org dilemma)
Also a general advice on which distro is likely most successful on Laptops
in general (Mandrake 10.1 ? , SuSe 9.2 ? , Fedora 3? , any other ?)
TIA for any relevant advice.

Walk to any computer shop, you can buy a 'generic' power adapter with
a
collection of plugs that you can fit. They are nothing special but if

20V 6A is quite unusual, and I would be surprised if a universal could
be had off the shelf. Commercially, it might cost half the value of
the laptop.
Have a look at rswww.com or www.farnell.com - you might need to buy the
