I've posted about this before. I used to think it was related to SuSE, but
a while back I installed Windows and my machine did the same thing.
Basically what it does is it subtly turns a little darker for a brief
second then goes back to normal. It happens randomly and it's extremely
annoying. I have an NEC CRT 17" monitor. Only like a year and a half old.
It's getting really old, though, and I'm not sure what to do.

Part of me wants to replace the monitor. But then another part of me says
that it could be the video card. I once tried to install Fedora Core 3 and
it wouldn't install. ALWAYS got hung up on configuring X. That seems like
a video card problem. Thoughts?

Preston

Just tried pulling the video card (Radeon 7000, about 3/4 years old) and
letting the on-board video take over. So far no flicker. Does that mean
that the card was the problem or that the card was pushing the monitor to
places it couldn't physically go? I had XFree86 dialed in to the exact
settings the monitor would allow.

Preston

I'd next try putting the video card back in. Occasionally card simple need
to be reseated - simple pull it out and put it back in. This is not needed
nearly as often as used to be the case. In the mid 80's I worked on a
PDP-11 which needed to have all the cards reseated monthly or it would get
flakier and flakier, give errors, and finally stop working.

I just tried this. See my other post. Good advice. Seems obvious, but
then, when you put a computer together and think you have it all right,
you know...

Anyway, I'll keep you guys up to date. Thanks everyone!

Hi again,

Looks like problem solved. No Midi sound yet, but got wave and stuff
to work.
I've used ALSA 1.08, not the driver from the Realtek site.

Then I followed this, using a AZX (azalia) as my card:
http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php?page=Quick+Install

I copied most of the moduleprob.conf file from the one that was in the
driver package downloaded from Realtek.

Good luck,
Yotam.

Yotam,

I emailed their technical support in taiwan several times, and I never
got a response. That sound card does not show either as a compatible,
or as a certified hardware for mandrake 10.1. However, shoudn't that
be compatible with the AC97 intel standard? I guess not. The OS
installs ok, but then there is absolutely no sound, and that's why we
need to install this custom driver that doesn't want to compile... It
would be insteresting to try with a different distribution, or with an
earlier version of the OS (maybe 9.x) and see if there is sound. If
so, then we should note what the exact configuration is. It could well
be the case that the OS does not detect the correct hardware, and
therefore it enables the wrong driver. These are just theories on my
side, I don't know anything about sound architecture...

Thanks!

Clue-less at the moment (probably linux kernel "too" advanced for

There is a SuSE 9.1 installed, but I don't know whether this is important.

Besides memory, fans,... and all the things are said, it also could be
sound hardware.
I have been having freezes for several months. I tried everything I
could imaging: memory, cpu and mainboard temperature, ... First I was
convinced it was video card related, but now I think it is sound chips
related. I realized that hangs are more common if I am using, or have
used since last reboot, sound device. I have one of those boards (ASUS)
with integrated sound chips (CMI8738).

So, in your case, it may be any thing. If hangs happen shortly after
booting, you can try to isolate the problem changing hardware, enabling
or disabling NIC, sound, memory, ...

Try out Kanotix from http://kanotix.com/info/index.php - this Linux
version is free and runs completely off the CD and has a brilliant
hardware auto-recognition.

I wasn't sure if I should start a new thread or not, so I'll start
here... the same Sparc 10 is still available, and I've become
interested in hosting a website at home. In terms of traffic (because
I'm bound to get thousands of hits daily in no time), is the Pentium
III still the better way to go, or does the Sparc 10 handle traffic
better?

Thanks again.

Assuming the problem I'm having IS with my video card, I'm wondering
the following. What is a good low-end video card that works well with
Linux and can easily drive my simple requirements (1024 x 768 at 85
refresh rate)?

Define "low-end" in terms of price and features, please. pricewatch.com
says you can get an nVidia TNT2 for $19 + shipping, and one of those
will definitely do 1024x768 @ 85Hz as long as the monitor supports that.
The TNT2 works fine with either the evil binary-only "nvidia" X server,
or the Free "nv" X server, but you only get accelerated 3D with the evil
binary-only one.

Basically I want it to give me the best quality picture doing just
business work at the lowest cost. So no 3D needed. No gaming needed. So by
low-end I mean cheap and basic. Drives my monitor to do web surfing,
programming, etc. I want the picture to be crisp and colorful (which it
isn't, so much, with this on-board driver), but other than that I don't
have requirements. I'm not going to be gaming or anything other than just
programming/surfing/checking email, etc. If the $20 card works fine for
that, then that might be it. Just so long as the picture is good. If I can
get a better picture (removing gaming, etc. from the equation) for say...
$50, I'll spend that. I think my limit is somewhere in the $70 range. But
cheaper is obviously preferable, all things being equal.

Preston

A bit out of the price range you noted, but Matrox G550s
or G450s are hard to beat.

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=property&DEPA=1

MATROX G550 Video Card, 32MB DDR, 64-bit, DVI, 4X AGP, Model "G550" -OEM
$96.50

Matrox is Linux friendly. They will work out of the box with
any major distro. Matrox worked very hard to have
top notch 2D that was beaten only by specialized CAD
boards costing hundreds of dollars. I have always used these
and they are quite good, especially with good quality, large
monitors. They have 3d, but its not really a game board
yet handles that OK.
It was aimed at the business market for people who wanted
the very best 2D they could get at a reasonable price.

For that, its the best you'll get.

I have had no complaints with three of these I have.
And some models are dual head, you can hook up
two monitors if you wish. Mandrake Linux easily
supports this out of the box.

I have a big 21" Hitachi CM811 and at 1600 X 1200
these work very well indeed with this monitor.
Rock steady and razor sharp.

Not the lowest cost maybe, but I learned long ago
with a computer, you live a long time with a monitor
and a videocard. Might as well live with good ones
if you use it daily.

Sampling is clocked internally to the sound chip. Not all sound chips
support arbitrary sample rates. It is wise to confine your experiments
to 11025, 22050 or 44100Hz as these rates are all "guaranteed" to work.
Unusual sample rates may be rounded to one of those values above, or to
strange numbers.

Because the sample clock is generated off-CPU, it is quite stable. As
long as you're using DMA, the data will flow into memory up to the
buffer high-water mark, fire an interrupt, and then it's your job (or
rather the driver's) to service the interrupt and restart the DMA
engine into a second buffer.

Will just a buffer be filled and as soon as my program

I hope somebody who understands this better can enlighten

I have had great success with SUSE 9.2 on the Dell Lat 600.
Everything works, suspend to disk, 3d, CPU speed, temp
monitoring of the CPU and disk, etc. I even tested
playing a wmv file in Mozilla and suspending to disk..
it picked up right where it left off.. impressive! I've got
mine set to suspend to disk when the battery gets low.... and
I get a LOT of runtime on the unit... many, many hours!
Worst part is the winmodem... but probably not that big
of a deal and the linuxant stuff will allow you to
use it like a 14.4K modem (or you can pay to get full
speed).

I really like Dell (vs. other players like HP and Toshiba).

I've got an M70 coming in March.. stay tuned!

What video card do you have? I had an nvidia mx4000 card which would
freeze very often, and sometimes give me a black screen when X started. I
just got myself an nvidia fx 5200 card which works smoothly.

Hi,

Debian is a very good distro, it is extremely configurable, but the
other side of the coin is that YOU have to configure most of it!
Debian is provided with some plug and play but tipically most of the
hardware have to be specified by you; for example your video card:

# dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

Alternatively you can run knoppix (which based on Debian) and once the
system is up type:

$ su
# knx2hd

this command will install knoppix to your harddisk. I tried, it works
pretty fine.
Notice only to have one free partition ready to be suggested to the
installer (for example /dev/hda2) because the partitioner inside the
installer dosen't seem to work properly. So, you give it hda2 and say
ok, then it will do everything byy its own (find and install hardware,
partition hda2 atc...)

have fun!

^____^

Third option is Ubuntu - easy to install, finds most hardware, "Debian
with regular updates" - it seems quite polished for such a new distro -
it's worth a look, as well.

two times out of two (with a reboot in between).

What do you mean it crashed? On some boxes depending on the video card
it doesn't refresh the display properly because of some framebuffer
problems. But when the process is over then everything is fine. I
remember this was discussed on the QTParted forum and I also had once
the same issue but I don't remember the video card. Probably it was
intel 740. I'll check.

It started up just fine, showing the correct window with the tool bar on
the top and the listing of the available disk(s). I then clicked on the
/dev/hda disk icon to get the disk's information. It then brought up a
sub-window displaying the progress. It got the information about the
hda2 partition, but when it was in the process of getting the
information about the hda5 partition, the qtparted windows suddenly
disappeared, leaving me back at the command line prompt. I could not do
anything with the prompt, however, because the characters read from the
keyboard were incorrect. I had to press the computer's power button to
shut down and reboot.

Yes, some USB microphones does work. However, your question should not be
"which distro?" but it should be "which microphone?". Any distro with a
recent kernel will support USB microphones conforming to the USB audio
interface. The answer for your question is found at
