AFAIK that's a function of the drives nowadays. They present a perfect
disk and remap themselves if necessairy. Until they run out of remap
space. One could try and run mfr diags on them, might be worth a shot.

Find yourself a copy of the standalone SMART utilities; pretty much all 'modern'
drives support SMART, which lets you interrogate and manage the low-level drive
statistics and diagnositcs. Fits on a bootable floppy. |

Hi,
I couldn't find that diag thing on pkgsrc, or anywhere, for that
matter. What I did find was a site saying that if I would try to write
to the bad sector then the hd should automaticly place them to the bad
blocks list. So I did
# dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/wd0d seek=26268351 count=127
Actually, let me go back for a bit, I've compiled the kernel with
WD_SOFTBADSECT option, then I tried to compile ghc. After that I was
able to see the bad sectors using
# dkctl wd0 badsector list
which were 26268351-26268478.
Well, after the dd command I already posted it seems like the bad
blocks left are only the ones from 26268400 to 26268403. I tried to run
# dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/wd0d seek=26268400 count=3
but it didn't help this time. I ran
# smartctl -a /dev/wd0d
and, in the errors shown there, the commands passed to the harddisk
were read commands, which doesn't make too much sense to me. Any ideas
about what I should try? |

I have a ATA/ATAPI-5 hard disk (smartctl says its device model is
BI-MJDAS2-02 and serial numeber is 4 T444YZ7693). I don't know much
about the laptop's hardware, except it's a acer travelmate 612TXCi.
Having said that, while I was compiling the ghc on pkgsrc I ran into
what seems to be a hard disk problem. The kernel yielded "wd0e: error
