My machine is running in this configuration (though not with 23 machines
behind it). The hardware sounds very similar to yours (DEC P200MMX with
96 ram). I would suspect you'll have no problems at all.

there will be 23 machines behind it running a variety of OS, mostly
Linux, some WinXX and a couple of Macs.
mostly http connects to the outside, all boxen working at the same
time
Would I gain anything tangible in terms of speed of response as a user
on an internal workstation by using a pf/nat box with a faster
processor and more ram? Recommendations? |

for comparison sake, a cisco pix 506E (their 2nd cheapest) is a Celeron P2
300Mhz with 32MB ram.

no we get 100mb/sec to the port on the wall and from there to a fibre
optic wan so bandwidth is not really an issue
sounds like it's a tentative go
this will be replacing an older, noisy scsi box running
<gasp>ipchains</gasp> that has been 24/7 for 5 years now
I'm hoping it will be a quality upgrade |

Depends. Personally, I think it's quite likely you'll be fine, but the
only way to be sure is to try it. One caveat though, if your uplink is
DSL with PPPoE (on _that box_), the machine could turn out to be a bit
light on CPU. I haven't experienced any performance problems in that
area myself, but there have been such reports by other people in the
past. YMM definitely V. Google will probably turn up some figures for
comparison.
