I don't know this trick you're talking about, anyway I managed to get CAP
(Columbia Appletalk Package) to work quite easily on IRIX a few years
ago. It works reasonably well and is free and unlimited (though not as
polished as Xinet of course).

License for Xinet and Appletalk with IRIX

I am doing some work with some system 7 Macs that can only natively see
Appleshare servers, not NFS or SMB. I can connect for about 5 minutes to an
IRIX 6.5 machine before Xinet times out and disconnects the Mac. I have
heard that there is fix of some sort that disables that and allows you a
single connection of indefinate time length. It seemed this was the default
with the version of Xinet included in IRIX 6.3 but you could get it to work
on 6.5 with a modification. Any tips on how to correct it would be
appreciated.
