mac68k nbsd3.0 (sysinst and Mac installer both fail)
|
|
|
I have been trying for a number of hours to get NetBSD running on my Mac
Quadra 605. This system previously ran NetBSD 1.6.2 just fine.
I have a 4GB drive partitioned as root, swap, and hfs. I reformatted the
root with mkfs, and went about trying to install NetBSD 3.0 from scratch.
The Mac installer fails with "SCSI #5" read errors. Others seem to have
had this same problem, and there seems to be no easy workaround.
So I decided to try sysinst. This fails with a ""failed to write: no
space left on device" error as soon as I try to install *anything*. I have
created partitions from within sysinst, and confirmed that utilities like
Apple HD-SC can see them; so I know the partitions exist and are of the
proper size.
Hopefully this is something that occurs with some frequency, and the
answer is known to all but me. Anyone willing to help? If so, I can
provide more verbose info.

Install, at the moment, doesn't work. If you install say 1.6.2, and
then upgrade that will work. There is also a workaround in the
documentation
ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-3.0/mac68k/INSTALL.html titled
NetBSD/mac68k sysinst Bug Alert.
(I did the same, now busy 1.6.2 and then with sysinst upgrade ...)

Marc,
Thanks for that. The positive view is that this *is* a well-known bug, and
there seems to be a fairly straightforward workaround. The negative view
is that it's right there in the docs, and I missed it. *sheepish grin*
I'll give the manual newfs and mount a try tomorrow, and let you know how
that goes. A 1.6 install and then upgrade seems a bit more convoluted, so
I'll have faith (eek!) and try the easier method first.
Appendages crossed.

OK, installing 3.0 fresh using a manual newfs and mount worked like a
charm. Missing from the documentation, however, is the fact that
/etc/fstab must be edited so that your filesystems mount read-write. Not a
huge deal, and easily fixed.
Now I just have some pkgsrc questions, but those are more suited to a new
thread, which I shall commence forthwith.
