By ``in-depth'' I think of ``how to write one'', but your ``exempla
gratia'' seems to imply an ``in-depth'' without too much computer
code; though, this is comp.unix.internals and you chose to post here,
so I am clueless on exactly what you're looking for. I don't recommend
anything, I don't know what's good for you. In case you're looking for
how to use a UNIX system, you could skip straight to (5).
(1) ``Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment'' will show you a
lot of details of how UNIX works from the perspective of a programmer
who wants to write software which will run on UNIX. The last chapters
of the book, for example, implement softwares entirely --- I value a
lot such exposition.
(2) ``Operating Systems, Design and Implementation'' describes the
design and implementation of the MINIX system; you can see most of the
source code, and it is very detailed --- I value this.
(3) ``The Design and Implementation of the 4.4BSD Operating System''
describes the version 4.4 of the BSD operating system.
(4) ``The Design of the UNIX Operating System'' discusses System V
Release 2. It doesn't show source code --- it couldn't, that is (or
was) AT&T property ---, but it shows data structures used by the
system, it shows algorithms.
If you want to learn how to use UNIX, then I believe that there are
many ones which will serve you well. The last one that I've have seen
is called (5) ``UNIX for the Impatient.'' It is detailed on UNIX
usage; the table of contents is very detailed; that's nice to look up
something that you'd like to read about.
