Hi to all.
I have bought a used Octane 2 some weeks ago but I don't have an SGI
monitor.
So i decide to use a pc monitor with a video adaptor 13W3 to VGA.
I've bought a secure working video adapter for Octane 2 workstation to
pc monitor but nothing is visible on monitor.

Would not I have to see at least information of the bios?
How can I verify the functionality of the video subsistem without a SGI
monitor?
Do you think the unique way is by an sgi monitor ?

Thanks in advance

Was it for sure an adapter for sgi? Sun adapters are known for not
working with sgi...

Yes, if there was a BIOS ;-)

First, you need a monitor that will do sync on green, then you'll need
to make sure the monitor can offer the resolutions your graphics card
accepts. You mentioned an Octane2, so it should be a VPro, but what type
is it exactly?

Hook up to the console by using a serial cable. Whats the status of the
lightbar? While or RED blinking?

V6pro is very limited of usefull screenresolution when using standard
CRTs/TFTs but i think the startscreen always works at 60hz.

The person who sell me the workstation say that non operating system is
installed.

So I don't know if the front white lightbar is red blinking for this reason.

But I don't see anything on the monitor. And I can't detect messages
from my octane2.

Yes.

The Octane Ownerguide is available on techpubs.sgi.com. But for all
older SGI machines "9600 1 8 N" should be fine.

The lightning and the flashing indicates the simple hardware checks when
powering on the machine. There is also a LED tree on the lower right
when, after you have removed the front skin, which shows the status of
the hardware.

The test it with another CRT or TFT.

Some info from SGI:

Ooops. Does not sound good. Pull out the mainboard (first remomve
lockbar!), check if the memory is OK and not loose, check for bent pins),
set the mainboard, now pull GFX, check it (e.g. bent pins, do not touch
the compression connectors), set it and start again.
btw: you may also remove the dust, if you pulled MB and GFX

Here you find all documentation you need:

Now, there is another problem.

I see that sistem irix6.5 sturt up but.
I can see the octane logo with :
1) start system
2) install system software
3) ...... etc

Everything is visible but the problem is that if I start the system
maybe it switch to an high-resolution screen and monitor by OSD say that
frequenzy is to hight.

So nothing is visible.

How can I change video resolution at boot time?
Can I start in console mode and then makes some configuration?
Do you think that the problem start when X11 start the graphic server in
high resolution mode or problem occur before?

thanks in advance

Yes. Boot into 'single user mode' by choose entry '5' from the boot
menu. Than type in 'single' and enter the root password when the systems
asks for it. Keep finger crossing that the shell for the root user is on
that system disk and not on one which have to be mountet first.

After you have login use '/usr/gfx/setmon' to set another resolution.
