Hook a serial console of some sort to the system and remove the mouse and
keyboard. Use this console to start the test so you can see the messages as they
scroll by.
The tests will generally take quite a while, so be prepared to wait an hour or
two, depending on the model of SGI.
Clean any dust out of the system, reseat any connections and make sure there's
good ventilation around the machine. Check to see if there's any pattern with
the kernel panics.
If the system is crashing, you can usually be pretty certain that something has
gone terribly wrong.

I have recently been tasked with administrating an O2. I have some
Solaris and Linux experience, but no SGI/Irix. This O2 has been
experiencing frequent kernel panics and someone had suggested that I
run ide fe on boot up. I get through a lot of memory/cache tests, then
it tests the graphics adapter and "stops" at a left-right, black-white
gradient display. I have to hit the ESC key to get a response, and
that dumps me back to the maintenance screen. If I run 'ide fe' then
do a ctrl-c, I can run the qnd_gfx_test which replicates this behavior.
Is this behavior by design and expected? Is this black to white
display the end of the test? Is this the correct group for this post?
The dump_log command returns 1 passed test.
Also, can anyone recommend any good resources for SGI/Irix? Online or
hardcopy is fine.
Thanx
