It looks like you have an Intel chipset modem and Lucent chipset modem. I
think have used modems using those chipsets with GNU/Linux, but not using
the Windows drivers (as it appears you are attempting to do.) I compiled
the kernel driver. I like using the native driver, but I realize
compiling anything can be intimidating to some users. This post explains
what I did for the Intel modem.
http://groups.google.com/group/comp.os.linux.hardware/msg/e21cbc96c1d6cf85
The updated source for the drive is here (oops, split url below):
http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df-external/T8Clearance.aspx?
url=/9266/eng/Intel-536EP-4.71.tgz&agr=Y&ProductID=977&DwnldID=9266&lang=eng
Check www.linmodems.org for the status of your Lucent chipset modem.
If you don't want to compile the driver, then the best advice may
be for you to get an external modem. They usually work "out of the box."

Please don't top post. I have moved your response to follow the format |
adopted by this newsgroup.
I noticed after I posted that you are using a Intel-537EP. There is a
separate source/driver for that chipset. My links refer to Intel-536EP,
and that is the wrong driver. It appears version 2.7.95.0 is the latest
driver for the 537EP:
(split url, again:)
http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df-external/T8Clearance.aspx?
url=/9284/eng/Intel-537EP-2.70.95.0-suse9.3.tgz&agr=Y&ProductID=1230&DwnldID=9284&lang=eng
You said you have tried two versions of Suse. I see that Intel
supports Suse version 9.3 directly with a binary driver. Suse 9.3 is a
little old, though. The source is the best way, but you'll need to be
able to follow their instructions carefully.

In general, SiS5571 chipset has Disk Controller Problem related to Ultra
DMA mode in the Unix-like OS, such as Linux, *BSDs, etc.
This chipset uses and old version of SiS 5513 IDE controller that doesn't |
support UDMA only MWDMA-16 (according to the sources of sis5513.c). So
there isn't any problem with Linux/*BSDs is a limitation of the chipset
itself.
Hope this helps. |

According to the sources in sis5513.c ver. 0.16ac+vp (your integrated
IDE controller is actually an early version of SiS 5513) this chipset
version is not capable of UDMA only MWDMA-16. This is not a limitation
or 'problem' of *NIX but a limitation of the chip itself.
Hope this helps.

Just as an aside, I have a machine with a 5513 chipset in it that
doesn't do UDMA because the computer doesn't need that speed. It runs
linux too BTW and it's only a 166Mhz P1 with 64 Meg.

Hi,
I have two PC, one in office, one in home. I have installed the Ubuntu
in home pc, and also installed a lot of softwares. Now I want to copy
the entire system to office PC, is there any backup method to transfer
all the system of home to office?
The two PC is different.
No
You will need to install the OS and then the applications again on the
other PC.
Hardware will be different, different drivers and configuration....
If the hardware is exactly the same, you could copy disk content
perhaps...
If you compiled the other apps from source, and have the source tree in
one place, you could write that to DC or DVD, copy it to the other PC, and
do 'make clean' 'make install'.....
Or if rmps, just copy those rpms and do rpm -ivh on each...
might just work (in the right sequence...)
At least it once was that simple....
Recompile kernel and drivers too.....
Under some fairly general assumptions you can very well just copy a complete
installation except the kernel and kernel modules from one PC to the other.
Obviously the machines must be binary compatible (i.e. both say x86). What
you very roughly need to do is:
1. Pack your whole / directory hierarchy into a (compressed) tar archive
excluding some directories (e.g. /tmp /dev /proc /sysfs /mnt). Make sure
the filesystem is not modified during the backup (boot from a live CD and
mount read-only).
2. Boot target PC from a live CD and set up networking.
3. Partition and format target PC's drives.
4. Transfer tar archive from source to target PC.
5. Extract archive and create additional directories
(e.g. /tmp /dev /proc /sysfs /mnt)
6. Edit /etc/fstab to match new drive names.
7. Install new kernel on target PC and set up boot-loader.
8. Reboot.
Only recommended for experienced users but certainly doable.
(followup set to: comp.os.linux.setup). |

Again what I need is a detailed documentation on all flags and
configuration variables used during compilation of the kernel sources and
the dependencies among them. My goal is studying them/understanding the
compilation process in depth not compiling the kernel per se.
..
Thanks

You've neglected to say which Linux release you are using,
I am running Debian 3.1 |

I run in a small local network .sm7jqb.lan |
| Quote: | Is sendmail actually running?
Yes sendmail is running. |

Now we are talking bissnis |
I had problem ti set up Kmail to use sendmail localy, but it goes fine to
use 'smtp.sm7jqb.lan' as I do from my XP-box.
'mail.sm7jqb.lan' -> 44.140.249.65 the same box as localhost -> 127.0.0.1

Are there messages in /var/log/maillog about it?
Yes! |

Thanks! If I boot from Knoppix, is there a way that I can install
additional software, which is not included in the bundle? Since
Knoppix doesn't touch the harddisk, I guess one can't install extra
software. Is there to get around?
You would have to install it onto the disk. You could mount the windows
partition and install the stuff on there.
You obvioulsy cannot install them onto the CD.
|
It's not that obvious.
As a matter of fact, Puppy Linux allows you to install extra software to
the CD (even without using a CD-RW) using its multisession
technology/trickery (delete as appropriate).

Thanks to all of your replies! I'm using a laptop, which makes it
harder to get another harddisk. USB harddrive is a solution that
I'll consider. On the other hand, is it a lot slower to access a
USB drive?
Thanks,
xian
Most people are price sensative. When they find out how much SPEED
costs, they ususally say "well, I don't need that much speed". You
can get a new USB external box and stick a used 20G hd in it for
under $50 just for experimental stuff and education.
|
Many of those external boxes, however, just plain suck. I've only had one
out of 3 of these actually work without having to return and replace the
external box: the other two were broken right out of the box. |
