Hi
I am a newbie and I installed a headless server next to my Windows 2K
computer in order to learn better about Linux.
|
good good
| Quote: | My problem is as follows. Everytime that I login to the server and
execute "man" to look up the manual pages, I get some garbage characters
on the screen.
1. How and Where can I find in Linux the format definition for the
output, including what type of escape character they are using when
somebody connects from outside the server. I am using redhat 8.0
|
/usr/lib/man.conf controls how man pages are rendered (look for the lines on
groff/troff), but it would probably be easier to get a different SSH client
for Windows - putty (which is free) would be a good try.
Also, if you're just after a one-line description of what a command does,
you might like to investigate apropos or whatis.
Cheers,
Pete |

was
not so during a general despair after a connect failure.
Is the factory reset just to clear all settings except username and
password?
Now, what use would username/password security be if all anyone had to
do was hit the reset? Think about it
|
That makes no sense. Why would anyone want to break into a DSL
router if all settinmgs have been deleted? There's nothing there
that would be of any interest (no username/password combination
especially).
| Quote: | Yes, for pretty much all of them, I believe.

No. This is absolutely unusual for all models _I_ have ever
come across. The reset button should also be the last option
in case you forgot the password you've manually defined. If
the reset doesn't clear it, how would you ever be able to
get into the configuration menue again?

Why is there so much pressure *not* to run Linux on NON-x86 systems?!
OS X runs like poo on older hardware. I don't need GUI or anything

a text based 400 MHz server with oodles of drive space is great.
As for "best distro's"; there is no *best* distro. You choose the
distro that does what *you* need. You want my opinion on the "best
distro"? Build yourself LFS, and have a *clean* *cutting edge* *blazing
fast* Linux system. System responsiveness on a 2.4.18 kernel between
RedHat, LinuxPPC and LFS had LFS in the lead, as it doesn't install
unnecessary bloated software that other distros install by default.

I would say the error message is quite clear on this, go to "another
source" and get it. I'm not a debian guy, so I don't know where that
might be, you can probably get source from freshrpms or freshmeat.net.

The "first" machine is dual-boot wk2 with FC3, much newer :)
On this machine, the IBM, I'll probably use a tool called SBM to boot
from the cd.

I just tried this again, no luck
It's ok, though, I'll SBM or similar :)

Thank you for the link, that's exactly correct to use SBM.

The last resort is to unplug the keyboard and force the BIOS to register an
error. This either opens the BIOS setup screen, or reveals the secret
procedure.

BTW, it can be seriously hard to get at some BIOSes. Some IBMs require
you know the correct combination of keys to press and hold after power-up

joking.
I once acquired a machine that, when booting, displayed only the
memory test. No pressing of various keys would persuade it to
enter the BIOS Setup.
Hmm.. I wonder what happens if I remove some of the memory, then
boot it?
The resulting mismatch between what the CMOS claimed and the
actual amount of memory found caused the BIOS to enter Setup
mode.

unplugging the keyboard brought up a configuration screen for a boot

that :)

What does the user manual you downloaded from the IBM www site I mentioned
say about accessing the hardware.or BIOS setup facility?

Re: make win98 boot from cd?

what's the best forum for this? keep cross-posting?
from <http://www-132.ibm.com/content/search/300gl.html> I found the
user manual at
<http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=0&q1=300GL&uid=psg1MIGR-4BYJFD&loc=en_US&cs=utf-8&lang=>.
Using adobe's search, I looked through the pdf fiile for BIOS, nothing
jumped out at me as to how to enter the BIOS. However, booting with
the keyboard unplugged does good stuff!
I'm in the configuration/setup utility :)
By mucking in the utility I changed the boot a bit so now it says "IBM"
on the "boot screen" (?) and then says "f12 for network" and "f1" for
setup utility. I was pressing f1 all along, I don't know why it took
unplugging the keyboard to get into the utility to "enable" that. I
might've changed settings to now enable it? kinda moot, but...
Within the setup utility, nothing jumps out with regards to the boot
sequence, though.

I found a reference on the Net that says all Thinkpads require you to
hold the F1 key before turning the machine on to access the bios. Keep
the F1 key pressed while it's booting up and you're in.
This is the info we needed all along.
