Not trivially: it's playing fascinating games to store the actively edited
files in RAM and swap, if available. You can add packages to the CD image
with lots of published tools.
But if you're going that far, why not get an external USB drive and use that
to put your Linux software and working directories on, and boot from Knoppix
as needed? |

scientific computation, and it's very probable that the additional
softwares that I need will not be part of the standard bundle.
I originally consider installing linux like fedora core, but this
requires repartitioning my computer, and yet, I don't know whether it
can work with any OS other than windows.
I think I should boot from Knoppix and will try to mount the windows
partition and install additional software there. Is there any risk in
doing this, since it touches windows? Any tips are highly welcome!
If I find out my computer works with Linux, then I probably will try to
install linux on my harddisk. Is there any good and free partition
tool available? If I install linux, shall I install Knoppix or fedora
core? I only had experience in installing and using fedora.
|
I strongly recommend adding another hard disk, rather than repartitioning.
And the partitioning tools are built into many modern Linux installers, such
as SuSE and Knoppix. I don't think Fedora Core has a good one automatically
in the installer, but I haven't tried that in a few years. |

You've neglected to say which Linux release you are using, and your network
configuration. Is sendmail actually running? Can the machine send mail to
itself locally? Are there messages in /var/log/maillog about it? What do
your /etc/sendmail/*.mc files say? |

Is there a way to run linux from a CD without installing it on my
computer (and hence can avoid repartition the computer)? If so, which
linux vendor should I try? I'm fairly new to linux, so I guess debian
may be too much for me (since it requires lots of manual configuration
of the systems).
In addition, my laptop is windows, I'm not sure whether it'll work with
linux since some hardwares (such as winmodems) are only designed for
windows. How could I find out whether I can run linux properly?
Thanks,

Live bootable CD's: Knoppix, Ubuntu, just put "live bootable linux"
in google and have fun.
The advantage of live cd's is that you can use them to pre-determine if your
hardware will work with it. They are not designed for long-term use. If
you want to use linux on a longer term basis you need to install it on some
form of relatively permenent media: hd, usb/fw drive in multi boot mode
if you still need Windows too. Linux can work with FAT32 partitions just
fine but it is still IF'Y with NTFS writes.
You can also use live linux to solve a lot of Windows problems.

Thanks to all of your replies! I'm using a laptop, which makes it
harder to get another harddisk. USB harddrive is a solution that I'll
consider. On the other hand, is it a lot slower to access a USB drive?

Most people are price sensative. When they find out how much SPEED
costs, they ususally say "well, I don't need that much speed". You can
get a new USB external box and stick a used 20G hd in it for under $50
just for experimental stuff and education.

Many of those external boxes, however, just plain suck. I've only had one
out of 3 of these actually work without having to return and replace the
external box: the other two were broken right out of the box. |

You would have to install it onto the disk. You could mount the windows
partition and install the stuff on there.
You obvioulsy cannot install them onto the CD.
|
It's not that obvious.
As a matter of fact, Puppy Linux allows you to install extra software to
the CD (even without using a CD-RW) using its multisession
technology/trickery (delete as appropriate).

Copy the old .config file. Do a make menuconfig and DO NOT
configure anything. Just exit by saving. And then do a normal
make vmlinux or whatever you do. This works for me!

Again what I need is a detailed documentation on all flags and
configuration variables used during compilation of the kernel sources and
the dependencies among them. My goal is studying them/understanding the
compilation process in depth not compiling the kernel per se.
..
Thanks

The two PC is different.
No
You will need to install the OS and then the applications again on the
other PC.
Hardware will be different, different drivers and configuration....
If the hardware is exactly the same, you could copy disk content
perhaps...
If you compiled the other apps from source, and have the source tree in
one place, you could write that to DC or DVD, copy it to the other PC, and
do 'make clean' 'make install'.....
Or if rmps, just copy those rpms and do rpm -ivh on each...
might just work (in the right sequence...)
At least it once was that simple....
Recompile kernel and drivers too.....
Under some fairly general assumptions you can very well just copy a complete
installation except the kernel and kernel modules from one PC to the other.
Obviously the machines must be binary compatible (i.e. both say x86). What
you very roughly need to do is:
1. Pack your whole / directory hierarchy into a (compressed) tar archive
excluding some directories (e.g. /tmp /dev /proc /sysfs /mnt). Make sure
the filesystem is not modified during the backup (boot from a live CD and
mount read-only).
2. Boot target PC from a live CD and set up networking.
3. Partition and format target PC's drives.
4. Transfer tar archive from source to target PC.
5. Extract archive and create additional directories
(e.g. /tmp /dev /proc /sysfs /mnt)
6. Edit /etc/fstab to match new drive names.
7. Install new kernel on target PC and set up boot-loader.
8. Reboot.
Only recommended for experienced users but certainly doable.
(followup set to: comp.os.linux.setup). |
