Alas, this too fails because there's a conflict of the 0.16 documentation
with the 0.15.x documentation since they install files with identical names
in identical directories. I think I'll give rpm2cpio a try as suggested
earlier.
Thanks for enlightening me a little more about rpm's options.

In theory, the '--nodeps' option might work - but there is are safer
ways around this.
1. Grab the source rpm, and install that. This has no effect on your
rpm database, or anything else.
2. Have you got midnight commander installed? It will open rpm _files_
for viewing and copying components. Start mc, then keyboard/mouse your
way to the 'enlightenment-docs-0.16.7-1.noarch.rpm' file, and hit the
Enter key. I've used that option fairly often, especially with rpms
that didn't come from the distributor (remember that many distros use
rpm, and some are quite different).
Okay, what can I do? I've tried rpm -i --force
Getting a bigger hammer often just makes smaller pieces that you
have to pick up after you discover how it trashed your system. This
is RARELY a good idea.
BUT ... but ... I said that I didn't want to install the binary
until
I read the doc to see how much different it was from the previous version
with which I had to maintain compatibility.
Actually, I prefer working with the src.rpm for this, as you get ALL of
the
documentation (the binary rpms - even the 'doc-noarch' rpms often don't
include all of the documentation. Also, it includes the 'spec' file
that rpm-build uses to convert the source to a binary, and this will tell
you what options the package maintainer has selected. This may also impact
on your compatibility problems.

Well, I've apparently got Midnight Commander v4.5.42 installed and I've
brought it up and highlighted the rpm file and hit the enter key and apart
from a brief flash of the window, nothing happens! I've tried this in both
the left and right windows -- although never having used it before I have no
idea what the difference is between the two sides.
I might give the source option a try as soon as (a) I have time and (b) I
assure myself that I don't have the source for the older version already
installed.
Thanks for the suggestions

If all you want to do at this stage is examine the help doc, as I
posted several days ago, just grab the .tgz and read MAIN after you
expand the file. No need to install anything.
Since you have mc installed, just double click the .tgz file in mc,
double click enlightenment-docs-0.16.7, double click E_docs, highlight
MAIN, select View from menu at bottom of screen. Does it get easier?
Get it here:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/enlightenment/enlightenment-docs-0.16.7.tar.gz?download
or pick it from the sourceforge download list:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=2&package_id=116678&release_id=234365

You have to learn chain loading, and a fresh install of windows
might
(?) muck things up again. It's probably easier to fix, but I wonder if
it's easier than just installing GRUB on the MBR again, should windows
muck the MBR...
A subsequent installation of Windows would screw things up anyway, even with
the suggested location for GRUB, because it would uninstall OS/2 Bootmanager
(which is why I want to put GRUB elsewhere, not on MBR). Reinstalling
Bootmanager is no problem. But all that is moot, as there is very little
chance that I would want to install Windows.
|
Grub would not 'uninstall' Boot Manager. It would replace the MBR code
with a version which points to the grub.conf (menu.lst) boot menu.
The actual Boot Manager under OS/2 resides in its own partition
(usually one cylinder's worth of disk space).
The MBR passes control to whatever partition it is told to. The boot
manager program shows you your choices and passes control to your
selection. If you use Grub that can be a one or 2 step process
depending on whether Boot Manager continues to control booting to the
FAT, FAT32, VFAT or HPFS partitions.
If memory serves, waaay back under Wapr 2 or 3 you could 'dual-boot'
directly from the MBR BUT only between OS/2 and DOS (each in their own
partition if memory further serves). But it was limited to just those
2 because it had to fit into the MBR.
Installing Windows does screw things, because it ALWAYS over-writes
the MBR with its own stuff. But if you have GRUB (or Boot Manager)
installed that's not a real problem: Re-boot from something else
(floppies or Damn Small Linux or any live distro) and run a grub
re-install, or, as the case may be, a Boot Manager re-install with
'fdisk /mbr'.
The advantage of Grub is that it understands Linux kernels: you can
have different kernels (or even distros) in its boot choice menu AND
one choice can point you to Boot Manager, which understands OS/2, DOS,
Win98, WinXP etc. And unlike how Windows installs, you can set
partitions hidden with fdisk and install different Windows OS, each to
its own "C:" drive, so that they are individually standalone. Grub is
more confusing (in my opinion) if you wish to do that sort of thing
(hide some partitions while using others).
Giving Grub the first crack at things, followed by Boot Manager turned
out to be easier than the other way round... and far less worries
about things going south and leaving me with no access to my HPFS
drives. A credit card sized live distro CD and a few files saved on
the 'available-from-everywhere-D:-drive' means that I can always fix
things to boot and run without needing a floppy drive for my Thinkpad
(or the desktop).

Strange - on this box, I'm using an older version (4.1.35), and another box

highlighting 'CHANGES' and pressing F3 displays the contents of that
file. From the same point, pressing F5 gives a pop-up menu to copy the
file to some destination directory. I just checked this on the
other system with 4.5.51 and another rpm that happened to be there,
and it's working the same way. What are the permissions and ownership
of the rpm file? Also, what version of rpm are you using? rpm is
backwards compatible, not forwards compatible. RH6.x came out of box with
rpm-3.0.x, and updated to rpm-4.x during the supported life. RH7.0 came
with rpm-4.0 (7.1 with rpm-4.0.2, 7.2 with rpm-4.0.4), and I'm pretty
sure there were significant changes between rpm-3.x and rpm-4.x. A
quick check of the old errata lists show RH6.2 was updated to rpm-4.0.2-6x
(which meant it was for RH6.x) on Mar 21 2001. That was _probably_ a
second or third update of rpm itself, and I vaguely recall needing the
first update installed in order to install the second or similar. The
original version was not able to make the jump in one fell swoop. There
was a severe pain in the butt, because ftp.redhat.com (or the errata server)
only kept the latest version available for download. If you need the
intermediates, you may have a problem finding them now. Best solution in
that case would be to put the package onto a system with a modern version
of rpm, and use 'mc' there.

Got me - I use mc at least two or three times a month, and usually
just fumblefinger my way along without causing the world to explode.

Yeah, that always is a problem

If they're different versions INCLUDING JUST A DIFFERENT DASH NUMBER, then
it's no problem. The source gets installed into
/usr/src/RedHat/SOURCES/enlightenment-docs-0.16.7-1/
But if you have the "wrong" version of rpm, you're still going to run into
the same problem of not being able to unpack the rpm.

Re: Another GRUB problem
|
|
|
In reference to previous posts on this subject, I had said, in brief:
| Quote: | I had consulted the Linux+Win9x+Grub HOWTO by Joel Rosen dated
2002-01-10 as to how to install Windows 98 as aa dual boot after Linux has been
installed in hda. He suggested adding the following to grub.conf:
title Windows 98 booted from hard drive
map (hd0,0) (hd1,0)
map (hd1,0) (hd0,0)
rootnoverify (hd1,0)
chainloader +1
title Windows 98 booted from CD-ROM
map (hd0,0) (hd1,0)
map (hd1,0) (hd0,0)
chainloader (scd0) +1
title DOS booted from floppy
map (hd0,0) (hd1,0)
map (hd1,0) (hd0,0)
chainloader (fd0) +1
|
In response, Leonard Evens wrote, in part:
| Quote: |
I am hardly an expert since I am having some problems understanding grub
myself. I don't understand the syntax for the chainloader command, but
here is something you might try in the floppy section.
map ...
map ...
rootnoverify (fd0)
chainloader +1
|
This command sequence worked. I was able to install DOS from a floppy
in the A: drive.
However, I was unable to get Windows 98 up and running. I suspect some
sort of conflict between Linux and Win98 which prevented the latter's
installer from completing its tasks.
Sometime after mid-April I expect to get back to figuring out how to
get Win98 installed, perhaps by transposing the hard drives so that the
one with Win98 is hda and the Linux one hdb and then installing grub in
the MBR of the hda. In the meantime I have many better things to do.
Leonard Evens went on to say:
| Quote: | Windows 98 is an awful operating system. You would have much better
luck with Windows XP which, I believe, doesn't have to be on the first
hard disk.
|
ALL flavours of Windows are "awful", in my opinion. I am trying to use
98 because it is the one I have legally. (I do not have any illegally.)
I am now at the point that my need for any flavour of Windows is so
marginal that I do not want to spend any money on later flavours.
Another option is to keep as a backup a P2 box which already has Win98
and nothing else.

Re: Xwindows isn't working - Fatal Service Error: no screen found

I found the solution for my problem. The problem was directly related
to my ATI Radeon 7200 video card; specifically, the drivers.
I first upgraded from stable "Woody" to testing "Sarge" using the 2.4
kernel. (I couldn't get 2.6 to install)
I logged in as root, and typed at the prompt:
" apt-get install xlibmesa-dri "
Luckly the mesa open source drivers were already installed.
Then, I typed on the command line:
"nano /etc/X11/XFConfig-4"
I used the arrow keys to go down to the device section and replaced
what was there originally with:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Radeon9200"
Driver "radeon"
Option "AGPMode" "4"
# ChipID 0x4242
EndSection
I then went to the Module section and made sure that I placed a #
before Load "GLcore", and made sure that dri and glx were loaded. It
looked like this:
(... indicates stuff I was too lazy to type here)
Section "Module"
# Load "GLcore"
....
Load "dri"
Load "glx"
I saved the changes and exited.

What you say is true as far as it goes, but I stand by my post. Newbies
have no business logging in as root in X in 99 percent of all cases.
A few distros -- Debian and Fedora come to mind -- even disallow root
logins from xdm.
I can't remember a time when I HAD to do a full login as root. I'm sure
there are cases, but I can't remember any.
When I'm feeling lazy, I just start a file manager as root, but that
pretty much covers it. All configuration utilities that need root
access ask for it when the are started.
I may have overstated it slightly, but I don't know why this is so
shocking.
