The version out now is labeled for 5.2. Christmas is coming and it's

any idea how long that might take (time between versions?)

I have the Maurice Bach book "Design and Implementation of Unix" from
1996 or so. Is that too old or not relevant enough?

Thanks.

The book is too good, but it talks of a unix system for a uniprocessor
system.
You may also have a look at the book on unix internals by "Uresh
Vahalia".

The version before the 5.2 one was for 2.0. So I would suggest not to wait
for the 6.0 version, it might take a while to arrive and be
for 9.x 8-}

4.4, actually.

Depends. For general concepts: ok. For details: too old.

I can't tell you about timing about book releases, but from what I've
read, 6.0 isn't going to be too different than 5.2 for most of it. It
is refining alot of the interupt locking for better speed and
throughput, redoing the locking in the Network stack, etc. The way
book releases go though, I wouldn't expect a book about 6.0 to come
out for a year or two if they are updating it, but I don't know any
schedules, or even if they are updating the book.

The Bach book came out a decard earlier, in 1986, so its roughly 20
years old now. It covers Sys V r3.x from what I remember, which is
vastly different than BSD systems. Its an excellent book, but if you
are interested in FreeBSD or other BSD systems, its going to be more
of a historical note about what kind of things influenced BSD when it
was the "other" Unix.
